Knightettes win heated tennis meet over Lady Raiders

FARMINGTON — With the temperature and the humidity both nearly 90, and with the wind negligent and no shade on the courts, last year’s conference champion North County Lady Raiders, and runner-up Farmington Knightettes competed in an MAAA Conference tennis meet on Wednesday.

The Knightettes prevailed 6-3 in this year’s first encounter, taking two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles.

Farmington’s Morgan Smith and Amanda Brady dominated North County’s Miranda Maeys and Cheyenne Anderson in the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-2. Smith continued her dominance in No. 1 singles defeating Maeys 8-1.

The longest and most intense match of the meet was the No. 2 singles played by Brady and Anderson. After an early two game lead by Brady, the two ground-stroke players traded games with Brady holding the edge at each exchange of sides until Anderson surged ahead at 8-7. Brady broke Anderson’s serve to force a tiebreak.

The two were so evenly-matched  that they played deuce in 10 of the match’s 16 games. In the tiebreak, Brady was able to gain a 5-2 edge, but Anderson with a couple of passing shots closed to within one. Brady finished out the match with an overhead  and a passing shot down the sideline for the 9-8, 7-4 win.

Rachel LaMarr and Molly McBride fell behind 3-0 in their No. 2 doubles match, but a strong net game helped them rally back to win eight of the next nine games for North County’s only doubles win, 8-4, over Kayle Nephew and Kelly Freeman.

Jennifer Henson and Joannie Leach were winners of the No. 3 doubles for Farmington, shutting out Brittany Naucke and Paige Slinkard, 8-0.

Both McBride and LaMarr won their respective singles matches. McBride defeated Nephew 8-2 in No. 3 singles, and LaMarr doubled up Leach, 8-4 in the No. 4 match.

Henson was victorious in the No. 5 singles match over Erica Hampton, 8-2, and Freeman defeated Slinkard 8-3 in the No. 6 match.

Farmington travels to Fredericktown this afternoon at 4 p.m. with both teams holding a 2-0 conference lead. North County (1-1) will host Arcadia Valley at the same time.
