Constitution topic at recent DAR meeting

The Sarah Barton Murphy Chapter, NSDAR, held its first meeting of the new term on Sept. 1, at Ryan’s Steak House in Farmington. Regent Jan Kemp chaired the meeting, with Chaplain Sue Wade leading the ritual.

Member Cara Akridge introduced Carol Farr, who presented the program on Constitution Week of 2012. Carol talked about the signing of the Constitution, including this quote from Ben Franklin:

“Mr. President; I confess that there are several parts of this Constitution which I do not at present approve, but I am not sure I shall never approve them. For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged by better information or fuller consideration to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right but found to be otherwise. It is therefore that the older I grow, the more apt I am to doubt my own judgment and to pay more respect to the judgment of others.” She also talked about activities the chapter took part in to celebrate Constitution Week.

Regent Jan Kemp introduced new members Lisa LaComb, Judy Thompson, and Carla Gardner. Chaplain Sue Wade led the installation process for them.

Regent Kemp announced that the annual district meeting for the Southeast District will be held in Poplar Bluff on Sept. 14. The next chapter meeting will be held on Oct. 6, at the Primrose Baptist Church and Cemetery in Bonne Terre. Carole Goggin will present a workshop on cemetery genealogy.
