Lady Tigers take third with late win over Lady Raiders
POTOSI — In a game that was nip-and-tuck from start to finish, the Arcadia Valley Lady Tigers were able to pull out a 44-40 win over the North County Lady Raiders in Potosi Tournament’s third-place game.
Arcadia Valley’s three-point lead, 8-5 after one, was the largest margin ending any quarter until the final buzzer. The two teams were even knotted up at 29-29 to start the fourth and were tied again at 34 going into the final five minutes of play.
Brandi Hartrup nailed a three from the right wing to break the tie and give the Lady Raiders their last lead of the game. Arcadia Valley responded with baskets from Sami Price and Kristin Williams to take the lead at 38-37 which the Lady Tigers never relinquished in the final two minutes of play.
The Lady Raiders missed three straight free throws, a dilemma both teams suffered from throughout the game, and a steal by Anna Thomas, which she converted into two points gave the Lady Tigers a 41-38 winning edge.
Hartrup made a putback to close the score back to within one, but Peyton Mounce did the same and Price capped off the scoring with a free throw.
Arcadia Valley made 16 of their 31 free throws and North County was good on nine of their 20.
Kourtney Kekec and Jenna McGraw supplied five points each in the second quarter to reinforce North County’s second quarter comeback as they trailed by only one, 22-21, at the half. McGraw led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 12 points.
Thomas hit a much-needed three in the third quarter for the Lady Tigers only field goal of the frame, which also aided her team-high 12 points. Williams finished with 10 points.
North County (1-2) and Arcadia Valley (2-1) will play again tonight, this time on the Lady Tigers’ floor.
