Police chase man up chat pile

A 18-year-old man learned that it might not be a good idea to climb up the Bonne Terre chat pile if he is trying to run away from police.

Bonne Terre Cpl. Stan Jaco was assisting another officer early Friday afternoon when he recognized a man that had a warrant for traffic violations. He said the man, whose current address is in Park Hills, was taking pictures at Diamond Drill Park on Allen in front of city hall.

“He saw me and decided to run from there to the chat dump,” Jaco said.

Additional officers from Bonne Terre and Desloge Police Departments, as well as the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department, responded to assist with the foot pursuit.

According to police, the man threw rocks at police officers as he was climbing the chat pile. He was taken into custody and an ambulance was called because he was having trouble breathing after the uphill pursuit.

Ambulance staff released the man to police. The man was transported to the county jail. Police plan to ask for misdemeanor charges of assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
