FHS Teams score homecoming victories over Trojans

Lady Cats win 52-43

The Lady Blackcats defeated the Potosi Lady Trojans for the third time, Friday night.

The Lady Cats, who normally start slow, got off to a quick start, Friday. A three-pointer by Nicole Burns, midway through the first quarter, gave the Cats an 11-2 lead. They led 14-8 at the end of the first.

Early in the second quarter, the Lady Trojans cut the lead to 14-13, but the Cats increased it to 21-17 at the break.

An Emilee Gibson basket, two minutes into the third quarter gave the Lady Trojans their only lead of the game, at 22-21. Brooke Tonjum responded with a pair of buckets for FHS. Paige Godsey, Ellie Jensen, and Terra Helm completed an 11-0 run for the Cats. The third period ended with Fredericktown leading, 35-28.

Potosi did not go quietly, however. Gibson trimmed the Cats lead to 43-40 before Tonjum got a put-back. The Cats increased their lead with baskets by Tonjum and Godsey.

In the game, FHS Senior Terra Helm scored the 1,000th point of her high school career. She led all scorers with 16 points. Tonjum had 12 points and ten rebounds. Jensen scored 11 points and also added ten rebounds. Burns finished with eight points, and Godsey added five, including three in the final 1:18 to put the game away.

Gibson led Potosi with 15 points.

Thursday night, the Lady Cats lost to Central, 52-39, in Park Hills.

The Cats offense had difficulty getting going, as Central led 10-3 after one quarter and 19-11 at the half.

After scoring just 18 points in the first three quarters, the Lady Cats had 21 in the final period. The Cats cut the lead to 39-34, when Brooke Tonjum made a basket and a free throw with four minutes left in the game, but they could not get closer.

Terra Helm led the Lady Cats with 12 points. Brooke Tonjum had eight to go with eight rebounds. Paige Godsey scored seven, and Nicole Burns and Ellie Jensen scored six each.

Fredericktown (9-4) will host Ste. Genevieve, Thursday.

Blackcats top Trojans, again

The Blackcats basketball Team recorded a  49-36 Homecoming victory over the visiting Potosi Trojans, Friday night.

This was the third victory by the Cats over Potosi, this season.

Fredericktown trailed 9-7 after one quarter. An 18-5 second quarter, capped off by consecutive Alex Branum three-pointers to end the period gave FHS a 25-14 lead at the half.

Branum led the Cats with 17 points. Jake Korokis scored 12, Nathan Simpson had ten, Tyler Helm and Jeremy Pridemore had three each, and Justin Sawyer and Nick Oertel each scored two points. Simpson had nine rebounds. Sawyer added seven steals and five assists.

The Cats play at North County, Friday.

“I am really proud of the boys being able to make some adjustments on defense in the second half, which resulted in a win,” Coach Jason McMurry said.

Jeremy Pridemore led the Cats with 16 points. Brock O’Neal scored eight, Dalton King had four, Caleb Carver had three, and Rylan Matthews and Ross Lunsford each scored two. Luke Korokis added four assists and Carver had four steals.
