MAC’s Skaggs Memorial Scholarship seeks applicants
PARK HILLS — Fredericktown High School students planning to attend Mineral Area College in Fall 2013 have a new scholarship opportunity. MAC Foundation is accepting applications for the Rob Skaggs Memorial Athletic Scholarship through Feb. 30.
The fund honors Rob Skaggs of Fredericktown, who passed away in December 2011 at the age of 51 after a battle with cancer. The scholarship will award $500 to pay tuition, fees, books and other educational expenses over the course of the Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 semesters. The recipient must be a U.S. citizen, enrolled or planning to enroll at MAC full-time, and must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to Fredericktown High School seniors or graduates, as well as those whose studies focus on physical education or agriculture.
As a lifelong resident of Madison County, Skaggs was involved in his community, especially if it involved coaching sports like soccer, basketball and baseball for his sons, Josh and Eli. Skaggs’s wife, Missy, said not only was he a great father to his children but a wonderful role model for others.
“His athletes have now become men and women, and to this day, I’m often approached to be told Rob was ‘the best coach I ever had,’” Mrs. Skaggs said. “This Rob Skaggs Athletic scholarship is to honor not only athletes in Madison County but the excellence of Madison County students who dream of expanding their opportunities through higher education.”
The successful candidate will be chosen based on financial need, academic achievement, civic involvement through school and community, and leadership demonstrated through extracurricular involvement. A Scholarship Selection Committee composed of MAC students, faculty and staff will evaluate all scholarship applications received by the priority deadline and the final selection will be made by the family of Rob Skaggs.
The deadline to apply for the Rob Skaggs Memorial Athletic Scholarship is Feb. 30, 2013. To apply for any Mineral Area College scholarship, students should make every effort to ensure an up-to-date financial aid application is on file by the priority deadline of Feb. 1. Students wishing to renew previous scholarships must reapply each year through the specified application process. Scholarship applications are available for download at www.MineralArea.edu, and should include a letter of recommendation from an instructor as well as a one-page, typewritten essay outlining the student’s educational goals.
