MAC softball team records first sweep

HARRISBURG, Ill. — The Mineral Area College softball team achieved its first doubleheader sweep of the season on the road Friday.

Courtney Massengale finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored from the clean-up spot, and starting pitcher Kallie Federhofer singled twice against SE Illinois in a 10-5 opener.

Darby Ferguson had a double with two runs scored and J.J. Pisoni collected two RBI for the Lady Cardinals, who tallied four runs during the third and fifth innings to build a substantial lead.

Lauren Stamp allowed one run on five hits, and recorded two strikeouts over five innings of relief for her second win.

Farmington graduates Sonya Hahn and Erin Littrell also singled in the victory.

Mineral Area wasted an early 6-0 lead in game two, but snapped a tie in the eighth inning to prevail 7-6.

Massengale again powered the Lady Cardinals by going 3-for-4. Federhofer added a double among two hits, and Ferguson chipped in two RBI.

Maggee Cunningham settled for a no-decision during her debut in the circle. She allowed four earned runs while fanning three over 6 2/3 innings.

Rachel Arnold got the final out of the seventh after SE Illinois scored twice to forge a deadlock, then threw a scoreless eighth for the win.

Chelsei Dale and Jessy Wallace had RBI singles, and Sami Jo Horrell scored twice. MAC netted six runs in the opening frame and finished with nine hits.

The Lady Cards will face East Central for two important Region 16 games Saturday in Union, Mo.
