Iron County buys historic funeral home
Iron County
The Iron County Commission has voted unanimously to purchase the White Funeral Home property in Ironton at a cost of $200,000, according to The Mountain Echo. The sale is contingent on obtaining a clear title.
Presiding Commissioner Don Barzowski said the county will borrow from its $750,000 established line of credit. The purchase includes the historic funeral home building, three lots and three partial lots.
County officials were interested in the property, said Barzowski, because the courthouse is essentially landlocked and cannot accommodate needed office space. Also, the county will soon need to address the building of a new jail and will need land for that project.
The funeral home encompasses around 10,000 square feet of space and Barzowski said the building could be remodeled for office space.
White Funeral Home has been an institution in the community for more than 100 years.
