Grave robbery suspect charged on Halloween

Court records show whereabouts of ashes unknown

A man suspected of digging up his brother’s remains in February was formally charged with the crime on Halloween.

Rodger W. Twomey, 47, of Fredericktown, is charged with the class D felony of knowingly disturbing a burial site. Bond information was not available at press time.

According to court documents, witnesses told St. Francois County deputies that three days after the burial, Twomey dug up the remains from the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Bismarck and moved them to an undisclosed location.

Twomey admitted digging up the remains in text messages according to incident reports.

Deputies received a letter from the funeral home in charge of the burial advising that the deceased was cremated and interred at the Odd Fellows Cemetery.

The funeral director said he personally witnessed the burial of the cremated remains in an earthen grave and he marked the grave with a temporary marker.

St. Francois County Coroner Jim Coplin was asked if he was contacted about the exhuming of the remains. He told officers he was not.

A court appearance has not been set.
