Lady Cardinals recover for solid split with Jefferson
PARK HILLS — The Mineral Area softball team immediately followed perhaps its most demoralizing performance this spring with an uplifting win hours later.
The Lady Cardinals scored the game’s first six runs and overcame four errors to hold off Division I foe Jefferson 9-7 in the second of two games played Tuesday.
Courtney Massengale and Lauren Stamp each belted home runs, and Mikala Torrence was 3-for-4 with two RBI to pace the Mineral Area attack.
Stamp pitched a complete game for the win, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Alicia Otero doubled and the Lady Cardinals also received hits from Darby Ferguson, Kimmie Roberts and Sonya Hahn.
The opening contest saw Mineral Area commit nine errors during a 27-7 blowout by the Vikings, who scored 10 runs in the opening frame and 12 more in the second.
Torrence and Tynai’ Burrow launched 3-run homers in the fifth inning, and Massengale connected on a solo shot in the second for MAC.
Carrie Adams took the loss in the pitching circle. Mineral Area (17-14) will host Lewis & Clark for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
