Tribute concert to ‘Tower of Power’ scheduled

The Mineral Area College Studio Music group will present their Spring 2014 show, “A Tribute to Tower of Power,” at 7:30 p.m. this Friday and Saturday evening in the Mineral Area College Theatre. Both performances are sponsored by MAC Studio Music and are free to everyone.

Since 1968, Tower of Power has created their own unique brand of soul music. They are best known for their funky, soul-sound highlighted by a powerful horn section and precisely syncopated bass guitar and drum lines. Tower’s rhythm section lays down a groove like no other band. The band’s horn driven sound is unique, and the way they approach everything, from writing and arranging to mixing and performing, is totally their own. Combine all of that with an outstanding lead vocalist and vocal harmonies and you have one of the most dynamic groups of musicians to ever hit the stage.

Dr. Kevin White, director for the concerts states, “that with no disrespect to James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Earth, Wind and Fire and all of the wonderful Motown acts, that “Tower of Power,” without a doubt, are still the greatest soul and funk band of all time.

“Their music is incredibly complex from a musicians’ point of view……but still comes out so funky and soulful that even ‘whitebread’ like myself would want to get up and dance to it. No words can really describe how tight the musicians are with the intricacies of their performances while at the same time, tugging at your heart with their beautiful vocals and harmonies.”

The presentation will feature hits from many of their albums and CDs from across the decades, all performed live on Friday and Saturday night in the MAC Theatre.
