Driver flees scene of early morning wreck

As of 6:30 a.m. authorities were searching for a man last seen running from the scene of a high-speed crash on U.S. 67.

According to reports, witnesses said they observed the vehicle headed north on U.S. 67 at speeds near or in excess of 100 miles per hour at about 6:02 a.m.

The driver lost control of the SUV in the area of Rosener Road, just north of Leadington. The vehicle went off the roadway, through a Missouri Department of Transportation sign, and struck a utility pole.

The driver reportedly jumped out of the SUV and ran from the scene. He was reported to be a male believed to be in his early 20s. 

An initial check of the license plates came back to a St. Francois County resident with a date of birth in the 1930s. Police were checking with the registered owner to see if the vehicle was stolen overnight.
