Fundraiser this weekend for Wood family

A fundraiser will be held this weekend for a Marquand teenager killed last week in Cape Girardeau County.

Greenville R-II School District Superintendent Todd Porter said the school district is hosting a fundraiser for the family of Tristin Wood at 6 p.m. Friday at the Greenville Elementary cafeteria.

“It’s a silent auction and pulled pork dinner to help pay for funeral expenses and hopefully help start a scholarship in his name,” said Porter.

According to the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Department the accident occurred in Randles, which is in southwest Cape Girardeau County.

Cape Girardeau County Captain David James said Tristin James Wood was working for Robertson Construction Company as an intern for the summer in Cape Girardeau County.

“Robertson Construction was hired by Cape Girardeau County to work on a bridge, James said. “They had been there about a month or so doing bridge work. Tristin was near the crane and they were working on taking the crane apart and something happened.”

James said the boom was in the air and the cables kept pulling up.

“The cables didn’t stop,” James said. “They tried to reverse the boom and then the cables snapped in half, fell and hit Tristin.”

James said right now it is being labeled as equipment failure.

“OSHA and the company’s safety team from Memphis were both called in to investigate,” said James.

An autopsy was done by the Cape Girardeau County Coroner’s office as part of the investigation.

James said right now there is no criminal investigation it is just an accident on the construction site.

Porter said Wood was going to be a junior 2014-15 school year and played basketball for the district.

“It was a terrible ordeal,” Porter said. “He was a good kid and was well liked by everyone. We’ll all miss him.”

Funeral services were held at Follis & Sons Funeral Home in Fredericktown and burial was held at Union Light Cemetery Saturday. A full obituary appears on page 6.
