Soccer Cats win home opener, improve to 1-1

The Blackcats Soccer Team improved to 1-1 on the season with a 4-1 victory over St. Clair, Tuesday, here.

The game was scoreless for the first 30 minutes. Right at the 30-minute mark, Tyler Helm booted one past the St. Clair goal keeper, who came out to challenge.

“Defensively, Senior Luke Wagganer was a force that proved nearly unstoppable,” Coach Brandon Hale said. “Stephen Burrows and Bryce Roberts played hand in hand with Luke to create a defensive line that would be penetrated just once late in the second half.”

Cats Keeper Elijah White stopped a St. Clair penalty kick late in the half to maintain the 1-0 lead.

After the break, Fredericktown’s offense got into gear. Joey Skees and Cody Hoar scored to make it 3-0. St. Clair scored on a header, but Skees’ second of the match pushed the lead back to three goals.

“Tanner Davis and Tyler White shined at the mid field,” Coach Hale said. “Freshmen Gary Ward and Logan Watson would assist Helm and Skees on the win.”

White had five saves.

Monday night, the Varsity Cats fell behind 9-0 at halftime and eventually lost, 10-0, at Sikeston.

Tyler Helm missed an early scoring chance by inches, according to Coach Brandon Hale. After the half the Cats held Sikeston for nearly 20 min before the final goal by Sikeston would end the game. Elijah White took the goal late in the game to make several saves.

The JV Cats jumped to a 1-0 lead on Sikeston, with a goal from Gary Ward assisted by Logan Watson. Sikeston struck back with a pair fo goals for a 2-1 victory.

“Defensively, Hunter Kay played well in the goal,” Hale said.
