Blackcats lose conference opener at Potosi

The Fredericktown Blackcats Football Team lost 19-0, at Potosi, Saturday.

Originally scheduled for Friday night, the game was moved to Saturday due to thunderstorms.

The game was highlighted by solid defense from both teams. The first quarter remained scoreless until the 1:54 mark, when Potosi’s Austin Cooley went up over FHS defender Patrick Smothers for a Jordan Huerta pass and tipped the ball back to himself for a 19-yard touchdown. The PAT made it 7-0.

Fredericktown drove to the Potosi 20 yard line, but turned the ball over after a bad snap resulted in a fumble.

A Cats’ punt gave Potosi the ball at the 47. Cooley capped the drive with a 21-yard run. It was 13-0 with 3:06 to play in the half.

On their first possession of the second half, the Cats went 56 yards, gaining a first down at the Potosi 21. Again, a fumble ended the drive for FHS. The Trojans went three and out, and Fredericktown drove to the Potosi 30 before another drive stalled.

The Cats had a touchdown pass called back for a holding penalty. On their next possession, they again drove deep into Trojans’ territory. On first down from the 13, Colley picked off a pass near the goal line and returned it 99 yards for the final score. The PAT was blocked.

For the game, Drake Spangler led the rushing attack with 44 yards on 11 carries. He also completed ten passes for 74 yards. Zak Keller caught four passes for 31 yards. On defense, Dalton King led with nine solo tackles, five assists, and four tackles for a loss, and two sacks. Carver added seven solo tackles. Braden Matthews had a PAT block.
