Wrestling Roundup: Rebels place third at home

PARK HILLS – The host school finished third among 12 wrestling teams at the Central Invitational Duals on Saturday after five individuals posted undefeated records.

The Rebels edged New Madrid County Central 37-29 in the championship pool after falling to St. James 45-30 and Sullivan 45-27.

Brandon Maberry (182) recorded three falls and received two forfeit wins. Dustin Saunders (170), Sean Mahoney (195) and Russell Harrington (220) notched one pin each while going unbeaten for Central.

Jonathon Goheen (138) polished off his 5-0 day with a 12-1 major decision against NMCC, and Kwinton Burnett was 3-2 including a pair of falls.

Central topped Potosi 40-21 to decide a preliminary pool after both dominated Springfield Catholic, which was open at nine weight classes.

Potosi placed eighth after suffering losses against Liberty (39-27), Brentwood (55-24) and Festus (42-35). Nick Juliette, Cooper Wells and Ben Turnbough were all 5-0 to lead the Trojans.

Gateway to the Best

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Collin Huitt shined with a perfect 5-0 record at 170 pounds as Farmington competed in the challenging Gateway to the Best Duals tournament Saturday at Lindenwood University.

The Knights picked up wins of 49-19 over Lebanon and 46-21 over Mexico after dropping its first-round pairing, 66-3 against regional powerhouse Mater Dei of Evansville, Ind.

Huitt recorded four falls during the tournament plus a 3-1 decision for the lone team points against Mater Dei. Farmington also fell to Illinois schools Granite City (36-34) and Belleville West (36-30).

Logan Harman (126) finished 4-1 overall with two falls and two major decisions. Bradly Harman (113) went 3-2 including two falls, and Devin Savage (220) added a pin among three triumphs.

Jason Harrington, Jared Nickelson and Tyler Harman were also 3-2 for the Knights.

Ste. Genevieve Duals

STE. GENEVIEVE – Seven wrestlers went unbeaten and Ste. Genevieve finished one point shy of winning its home duals tournament on Saturday.

Fulton edged the Dragons 35-34 in the championship round after Ste. Genevieve posted victories over Roosevelt (84-0), St. Clair (84-0) and Dexter (54-15).

A.J. Gonz (182) and Ethan Vaeth (220) starred for the Dragons by recording four falls each. Andrew DeRousse pinned two opponents and earned a major decision while also going 4-0.

Tyler Jones, Gabe Harman and Austin Brewer each collected two falls without taking a loss, and Wesley Dickens ended the day undefeated.
