Ten Dragons advance to Friday’s rounds at State

COLUMBIA – The Ste. Genevieve Dragons won nine of their 12 matches in the Class 2 first-round of the State Tournament, and they also had one wrestler continue in the Tournament after winning his wrestleback match to advance 10 wrestlers in all to Friday’s rounds, resulting in the Dragons scoring 27 points to move into sixth place after the first day.

The Central Rebels had three of their five wrestlers survive the first day, and the Potosi Trojans hopes lie with James Bone (138), their only wrestler still left in the tournament.

Ste. Genevieve –

Out of their nine wins in the opening round, only Wesley Dickens (113) and Ethan Vaeth (285) were able to pin their opponent in their respective matches. Vaeth took only 23 seconds to pin Jonathan York of University City.

Wade Dickens (120), Tyler Jones (145), and Austin Brewer (152) were all able to gain extra points for the Dragons by recording major decisions in their matches, Nathan Geisner (106), Tanner Jones (132), Wyatt Hahn (170), and Albert Gonz (182) all won by a decision to earn passage into the tournament’s quarterfinals.

Andrew Derousse was able to win a 10-2 major decision in his wrestleback match to advance to Friday’s second wrestleback round.

Central –

Brandon Maberry (182) punched his ticket into the quarterfinals as he recorded a fall over Zach Keeven of St. Charles West just six seconds before the end of the second period.

Jonathon Goheen (138) and Russell Harrington (20) both lost by fall in the opening round, but both bounced back in the wrestleback round to keep their hopes alive with Goheen winning a decision and Harrington posting a fall in 2:44.

Potosi –

James Bone (138) pinned Luke Drenon of Odessa in the third period of their opening round match earn a spot in the quarterfinals as the field of 16 dwindled down to eight in his weight class. Nick Juliette (120) lost both of his matches by fall to exit the tournament, and Ben Turnbough (152) lost both of his by forfeit.
