Cardinals stay ahead of high-scoring Hawks

NORFOLK, Neb. – Sophomore guard Daniel Norl scored 19 points and the Mineral Area men’s basketball team defeated Northeast (Neb.) 102-92 following a 13-day schedule hiatus on Friday night.

The Cardinals (7-1) entered halftime with a 52-43 lead, and never trailed by more than eight points in the second half. Their largest advantage occurred at 91-75.

Montell Goodwin had 17 points and Yashua Trent contributed 16 points and seven assists in the victory. Northeast (6-4) was held under 100 points for the first time in five games.

Mineral Area extended a 32-30 margin to 42-32 after Eugene Jones scored three layups and four total field goals in a span of about two minutes.

Norl answered a dunk by the Hawks with a 3-pointer, and Lamar Morgan connected from long range to counter a traditional 3-point play for a 79-66 difference.

The Cardinals will face Iowa Western in a neutral-court game on Saturday at 4 p.m.
