Lady Cats win tourney opener

The Fredericktown High School Girls Basketball Team opened with a 61-33 victory over Cape Girardeau Central Monday night in the first game of of the inaugural Fredericktown Tournament.

The game was tied at 9-9, as both teams were turning the ball over and missing perimeter shots. Fredericktown scored the final four points of the first quarter to lead 13-9. The Cats run continued into the second quarter. Fredericktown took advantage of some steals and good passing to outscore the Tigers, 17-2 and take a 30-11 lead into the break. Central trimmed the the lead early in the third quarter, but Fredericktown led 48-25 with a quarter to play.

Paige Godsey led a balanced Fredericktown offense with 12 points. Callista Francis and Raylyn Dodd each scored 11. Mattie Whitworth scored nine, Grace Bradford had eight, Annabeth Phillips scored four, and Rachel Hamilton and Kirsten Hanner scored three points, each. Francis led with ten rebounds. Phillips had eight assists. Godsey had six assists and five steals.

Saturday evening, the Cats will play for the tournament championship or for third place, pending the outcome of Tuesday night’s contest against Potosi (after press time).
