Wappapello Lake – The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with the Wappapello Lake Area Association (WLAA) will be kicking off the lake’s 75th Anniversary Celebration April 2, 2016, with the Wappapello Woodlands Expo.
This event will take place at the Redman Creek Recreation Area and showcases the rich history of the timber industry, past and present, in southeast Missouri. This event offers activities for the entire family.
A Timber Sports Conclave will be taking place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature 12 events including single and double crosscuts, underhand chopping, standing chop, various chainsaw speed cuts, hot saw speed classes, and axe throw events throughout the day. In addition, there will be a winner-take-all lottery standing log Accuracy Fell event. WLAA will be offering cash prizes for first place winners and Boatner’s Enterprise, our local Stihl dealer, will provide two MS-661 Stihl chainsaws to be awarded to the overall points winner for traditional and chainsaw events.
This competition is open to all area competitors who can register by contacting Park Rangers Jennifer Morse or Eric Limanen at 573-222-8562. Competitor registration will also be available the day of the event from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Timber industry vendors and craftsman booths will open at 8 a.m. Historical displays and an archery range provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation will be open throughout the day.
Finally, Little Lumber Jack games will begin at 11 a.m. with the chance for kids to win prizes. There is still booth space available for anyone who may be interested in participating. Please note the boat ramp at Redman Creek will close for the setup and duration of this event beginning at 10 p.m. on April 1 and will reopen after -7 p.m. on April 2.
