The Fredericktown High School Girls Basketball Team lost a close game with Central, Saturday night.
The Rebels defeated the Lady Cats, 55-52 to capture third place in the Fredericktown Tournament.
Fredericktown jumped to an early lead against the Lady Rebels. The Cats led 15-8 after one quarter. Central scored 20 second-quarter points to take a 28-27 lead into the intermission.
The Lady Rebels still led 41-37 late in the third quarter. Maddie Burrows made a basket, and Mattie Whitworth made a steal on the inbounds and was fouled. Whitworth’s two free throws tied the game at 41-41 entering the final quarter.
The Cats took a 48-47 lead on a basket by Burrows with 4:16 to play in the game. Central then scored seven straight points in the next four minutes to pull ahead. Burrows and Kylie Mann each scored in the game’s final eight seconds, but it was not enough to catch Central.
Raylyn Dodd led three Cats in double figures, scoring 14 points. Brooklynn Hudson scored 13, as she made four of five shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Whitworth scored ten points, and Burrows had eight.
In pool play, the Cats defeated Perryville, 54-35, Tuesday; and lost to eventual champion Arcadia Valley, 52-41, Thursday.
Raylyn Dodd led the Lady Cats against Perryville with 20 points. Callista Francis added 14.
Against Arcadia Valley, the Cats led 22-20 at the half and 34-33 heading into the final quarter. Francis paced the Cats with 15 points. Dodd added 11, and Rachel Hamilton had seven.
The Lady Cats host St. Vincent Thursday.
Lady Cats to hold fundraiser for local veterans
The Lady Cats Basketball Team will be setting up a float (which appeared in the Miracles on Main Street Parade), with cartoon characters for local children to take photos with, 5-7 p.m., Dec. 17, on the courtsquare near North Main Street.
There will be no charge, however, donations will be accepted, which will be given to local veterans.
