Lion’s Club Recognition Dinner

The Fredericktown Lion’s Club held its final meeting for 2016 Dec. 21.

A good crowd of members and friends gathered to recognize some outstanding members for their commitment to the club and the community. Special guests included past and present district deputies and zone chairmen, including Jim Miller from the Farmington Club and Murray Dunn, past district deputy. Pat and Ladonna Kemp from Kemp’s Auto Body were also in attendance and were recognized for the hard work putting on the first ever Razor Rodeo this past summer. They expressed interest in doing it again this summer.

Vice President/Treasurer Steve Tidwell thanked those responsible for all the great improvements to the inside of the club as well as the rodeo grounds.

A special thanks to Don “Legend” Kreiger and his family (Kolby and Kelly) for the hard work spearheading the rodeo again this year. It was a huge success. Legend also worked with a crew of members and volunteers improving the grandstands and perimeter fencing around the arena grounds. It looks great. R4 Ranch (Royer brothers) did a professional job installing the fencing and gates.

First Vice District Governor, John Preston then proceeded to honor long-time member Darren Henson with a 20 years of service pin. Preston also presented Leo Francis with the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award (The highest honor received as a Lion) for his long time commitment to the Lion’s club. Melvin Jones in the founding father of the Lion’s Club. Leo is a three-time past president and has served the Lion’s Club for many years. During the flood of 1998 Francis was instrumental in receiving a $10,000 grant from the Lion’s Club International Foundation and distributed those funds to needy people in our community. Leo is a retired teacher of 26 years and still lives in Fredericktown with his wife Jana.

District Governor Preston went on the talk about the Lion’s Club Leader Dog Program (which the club supports financially) where dogs are trained to assist those with disabilities.

The Lion’s club for many years has assisted financially helping those in need of eye glasses. For more info call President Dave Ward at 573-783-3100. The night was capped off with a great meal catered by Lana Stephens. The meal was sponsored by Ward’s Farm Center, and everyone enjoyed lots of fellowship and storytelling. A great time was had by all.

Congratulations to Leo Francis and Darren Henson and a special thanks to all members and friends who made 2016 a great year for the Lion’s Club.
