MHSVCA Hall of Fame to induct AuBuchon

BISMARCK – Paula AuBuchon has another significant appointment to keep before retirement from an exceptional 27-year career becomes official.

The longtime Bismarck head coach learned on Friday that she will join the 2017 class of inductees into the Missouri High School Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

“I would have to say I was in a little bit of shock because I was not expecting anything else volleyball related for the remainder of this school year,” said AuBuchon, who compiled a record of 528 wins, 196 losses and 15 ties over the past 24 seasons guiding the Lady Indians. “My second thought was, ‘Wow! I cannot believe someone nominated me for this award.’”

AuBuchon is a 1982 graduate of Lesterville High School, and played on a state championship squad during her freshman year when all Missouri teams competed in a single enrollment classification.

From there, she competed for Mineral Area College and finalized her Bachelor of Science degree at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.

Her passion for the sport shifted to the coaching ranks, and Bismarck reaped the benefits. The Lady Indians claimed 14 district titles plus nine MAAA regular-season championships and five conference tournament crowns.

Seven teams reached the state quarterfinal round under AuBuchon, and the 2000-01 crew marked a breakthrough for the program with an appearance at the MSHSAA final four.

“I am honored, of course,” AuBuchon stated. “But at the same time, it has caused me to reflect on my career over the weekend, and I have to give credit to my assistants and my players for all the successes we have had on the court and off.

“I worked with outstanding student athletes, and my assistants were always as passionate about volleyball as I was.”

AuBuchon, who previously won the prestigious Peggy Johnson Award in 2015 and took home three J-98 Dream Team Coach of the Year honors, will be honored once more Feb. 24 in Columbia, Mo.

She coached nine all-state and eight future collegiate performers. Nineteen former players either are, or have remained involved in coaching or refereeing volleyball.
