Roundup: Sprenkel drops 42, NC wins

BONNE TERRE – Junior guard Hayden Sprenkel surpassed 1,500 varsity points, and scored a career-high 42 on Wednesday night as the North County boys basketball team defeated Perryville 75-62.

Sprenkel was challenged to be more aggressive after ending with 10 points one night earlier in a road loss to Festus, and answered in a powerful way.

Perryville (14-10) buried a series of 3-pointers early in the third quarter, and grabbed a 48-46 lead on Josh Robinson’s transition layup off a steal.

Sprenkel rallied North County by scoring his team’s next 17 points, including three separate baskets while drawing contact. He converted 14-of-15 total free throws.

His perimeter three restored a 61-51 lead for the Raiders early in the fourth. Perryville made its closest pursuit from there at 69-63.

Senior Brett Hubbard added 11 points in his final home game, and extended a 35-29 halftime margin with a 3-pointer to start the third quarter.

Robinson scored 19 points for the Pirates. Jeff Reisenbichler added 12 points and Chase Brown had 11.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Ste. Genevieve 74, De Soto 49

STE. GENEVIEVE – Madison Reynolds neared a career high by scoring 35 points on 16-of-24 shooting from the field, and the Ste. Genevieve girls dominated De Soto 74-49.

The senior guard and Mineral Area College signee also tallied seven rebounds, five assists and four steals, and needs one more point to reach 1,500 for her varsity career.

Junior forward Avery Reed notched another double-double for the host Dragons with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Deryn Brown added eight points and Mattie Helms had seven in the victory.

Ste. Genevieve (16-7) closed the first quarter with an 11-0 run, and continued surging to a comfortable 41-23 halftime lead.

Madalyn Bone paced De Soto with 24 points.

Ste. Genevieve travels to Festus on Thursday.
