Winder strikes out 16 in series opener

PARK HILLS – A superb outing by sophomore pitcher Logan Winder propelled the Mineral Area baseball team past new Region 16 rival State Fair in game one of a doubleheader on Friday.

The right-hander recorded a career-high 16 strikeouts, and was rewarded as the Cardinals rallied for a 6-4 victory before dropping game two 3-2.

Winder worked around four first-inning runs to throw a complete game, and also went 3-for-4 at the plate for Mineral Area (16-8, 8-2).

State Fair (10-14, 1-9) gained an early advantage on a three-run homer to right field from Tanner Cantrell that cut through the forceful wind.

Chris De Los Santos brought in Colten Brown later in the first to increase the Roadrunners’ lead to 4-0.

Sophomore Conner Forsythe sparked the Cardinals in the bottom of the second by sending Devon Wilson home with a triple into left-center.

Mineral Area notched the bulk of its scoring in the fourth inning. Forsythe was again involved with an RBI double down the left field line.

Hunter Draffen crossed home plate on a single to right by Trever Lewis, and MAC tied the game at 4-4 after a defensive error allowed Lewis to score.

Mineral Area moved ahead on the next at-bat as Tanner Wetrich guided an RBI double along the right field line. Sophomore Kenton Crawford tallied the final RBI with a single to bring in Wetrich.

Lewis and Wetrich each went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the victory.

Roberto Ramirez pitched four innings and tallied one strikeout for State Fair. Aaron Bennefeld came in for the final two innings and gave up one hit.

The Cardinals struck early in game two as Crawford drove in Winder on an RBI ground out.

Each side was retired in order during a quick second inning. Jake McMahill recorded three strikeouts in the top half for the Roadrunners.

State Fair evened the score at 1-1 after Mineral Area starting pitcher Jeremy Rivera walked four consecutive batters.

Rivera ended with six strikeouts as the Cardinals used four different pitchers in the contest. Kollin Stone relieved Rivera and struck out eight over four innings.

A double into deep center field from De Los Santos set up another run for the Roadrunners in the fourth inning. He crossed home plate when Zack Ehlen sent a single into shallow center.

Mineral Area knotted the score at 2-2 in the fifth after a wild pitch from McMahill allowed Wilson to come home from second base.

McMahill hurled all nine innings for State Fair while throwing 121 pitches with eight strikeouts in the win.

The deciding State Fair run came in the eighth inning on an RBI single into center field by catcher Derek Shikles off Steven Carter.

Crawford was thrown out to end the game while trying to reach second base after tagging up on a fly ball from Forsythe.

Tanner Cantrell finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI for the Roadrunners.
