Big sixth inning fuels Valle past Tigers

IRONTON – Valle Catholic first baseman Kaden Bauman blasted a ball deep into left-center field in the sixth inning, and completed an inside-the-park home run due to miscommunication between Arcadia Valley outfielders.

A 3-3 tie had remained since the third inning prior to the unusual go-ahead hit from Bauman that occurred with a runner on base.

The Warriors (9-2, 2-0) eventually totaled four runs in the sixth inning, and defeated the Tigers 7-3 in MAAA Small-School conference action.

Carter Roth followed the home run by scoring on a single from Kellen Blum after getting hit by a pitch.

Arcadia Valley (5-4, 0-1) brought in Jake Pryor to clean up the big inning, but he was greeted by Nolan Schwent’s RBI single.

Pryor retired Roth to conclude the damaging frame, and quickly went through three batters in the seventh.

Cole Wood pitched the first five innings and allowed four hits while notching eight strikeouts to acquire the win for Valle Catholic.

Schwent faced three batters in the bottom of the seventh, and retired Kyle Helms on a grounder to first for the final out.

Tigers starter Isaiah Gibbs hurled 5 2/3 innings with seven hits allowed while tallying eight strikeouts in the loss.

Valle Catholic jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning as a result of multiple AV miscues as strong winds made fly balls difficult to track.

A fielding error at third base allowed Wood to reach first for the Warriors. He would later score from third on an errant pick-off attempt to first by Gibbs.

Gibbs redeemed himself moments later by picking off Tristan Rollhaus at second base to conclude any further threat.

Rollhaus finished 2-for-3 for Valle Catholic while Chris Loida ended with two hits and an RBI.

Neither pitcher allowed a runner during a brief second inning.

Tatum Jones narrowed the Arcadia Valley deficit to 2-1 with an RBI double that carried deep into left-center in the home half of the first.

Wood tacked on an RBI double of his own in the third inning to restore a two-run lead for the Warriors at 3-1.

Jones tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly to score Pryor after Gibbs hit an RBI single.

Pryor went 2-for-3 with a double that contacted the fence in center field during the fifth inning.

Valle Catholic plays Friday against Chaffee at Capaha Park, and Arcadia Valley will try for its first conference win against Valley on Tuesday.
