Desloge church honors first responders

The Parkview Free Will Baptist Church in Desloge recently honored first responders with a dinner to say thank you for all they do.

Parkview Free Will Baptist Church Clerk Nedra Gilliland said they invited all of the Desloge firefighters and police officers to come and enjoy a dinner with them.

“We prepared a big meal and we had a handful who showed up,” said Gilliland. “We just wanted to say thank you to those who serve the community and lay their lives on the line for us.”

Gilliland said they were blessed to serve a number of the Desloge firefighters and Desloge Fire Chief Larry Gremminger explained a number of the firemen were working. Since they are an all-volunteer fire department they have to earn a living by other means.

“We had talked about doing this for a while and it just started coming together,” said Gilliland. “Everybody cooked and Walmart donated ice and drinks and Homestead restaurant donated their delicious fried chicken.”

Gilliland said they had chicken, roast beef, chicken and dumplings and just about anything anyone can think of.

“We fixed a big dinner, had a few donations and fed all who would come,” said Gilliland. “We just wanted to say thank you to those who serve. We were pleased to do it and we were pleased by those who came.”

She added they may try another dinner like this in the future with hopes more would be able to attend.
