Lady Cards suffer rare loss to Cottey

NEVADA, Mo. – JaNiah Jones cracked the starting lineup in game two of a doubleheader, and finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Mineral Area softball team on Friday.

The Lady Cardinals scored twice in the sixth inning, and notched a 6-4 victory over Region 16 opponent Cottey after falling to the Lady Comets 4-3 in game one.

Madison Binkard capped a solid afternoon at the plate by likewise going 3-for-4 with a double. Aubrie Venegas and Samantha Ratledge each provided two of the 13 hits for the Lady Cardinals.

Lily Brockus hit a tying home run and went 2-for-3 as Cottey (7-11, 2-4) erased two separate two-run deficits. Breanna Kelley contributed two singles.

Aubrianna Jones earned a complete-game win despite hitting three batters, and also contributed an RBI triple to the offense. She allowed four runs on eight hits.

Sydney Parker doubled and Lilly Pecaut added an RBI for Mineral Area (11-20, 3-3).

Cottey pushed across a tying run in the seventh inning before netting two in the home half of the eighth to capture the opener in walk-off fashion.

Leadoff batter Michala Coffman went 2-for-3 with a triple and double, and winning hurler Marisa Jervis lasted the duration from the circle while limiting MAC to just five hits.

Binkard paced the Lady Cardinals with her third straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a double. Allison Law and Bradley chipped in RBI hits for the visitors.

Brooke Gardner delivered six strong innings with three strikeouts, but was pulled with a 2-1 lead after scattering five hits. Jones was charged with two unearned runs in relief.

Kaitlin Orr and Olivia Adams singled for Mineral Area. The teams are scheduled for two more games on Saturday.
