Roundup: Softball showdown goes to WC

BISMARCK – Erica Barton is known for her power after hitting 11 home runs last spring, but alert base running played a major role for West County in a comeback win on Thursday.

The senior infielder singled, stole two bases, and crossed home on Tristin Martin’s shallow sacrifice fly in the seventh inning as the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 7-6 over conference and district rival Bismarck.

RikkiLyn Wright overcame eight walks to earn the win as West County (9-3, 5-0) escaped another tight battle with the pesky Lady Indians. She allowed five hits and struck out seven.

Bismarck (5-1, 3-1) capitalized on several defensive errors to build 5-0 advantage through innings, and made a variety of nice plays in the outfield when West County made solid contact.

Consecutive RBI doubles by Martin and Ivy Meinershagen rallied the Lady Bulldogs in the fifth inning, and Wright tied the game at 6-6 with an RBI triple in the sixth.

Barton finished 3-for-3 with two RBI, and Wright had two hits in the victory. Whitney Dee and Haylee Watson also provided key singles.

Kendra Cooper collected two hits for the Lady Indians, who pushed West County to extra innings last season in the district final.

Alyssa Sago went the distance in the circle, and recorded six strikeouts for Bismarck.

BASEBALL

Bismarck 16, Bourbon 0

BISMARCK – Grant Latham allowed just one hit and one walk over five innings while striking out six, and went 4-for-4 with two doubles to lead Bismarck past Bourbon 16-0 in five innings.

Logan Dunn crushed a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and was 2-for-4 with five RBI. Bismarck (9-2) scored seven times in the third to build an 11-0 lead.

Shawn Mork, Timmy Mork and Jacob Reese were each 2-for-3 while Joey Gillyon added three RBI for the Indians.

Jacob Gibson had an RBI double. Hunter Drake and Austin Jarvis contributed singles.

Kingston 13, South Iron 3

ANNAPOLIS – The Kingston baseball team topped South Iron 13-3 convincingly on Thursday to earn its first win of the season.

Keith Jessen recorded 10 strikeouts with no earned runs allowed through five innings, and earned the win for the Cougars (1-10).

Kyle Vandergrift and Jessen each notched three hits with three runs to propel Kingston.

GOLF

West County 180, Clearwater 265

PIEDMONT, Mo. – Carson Claybaugh achieved medalist honors for West County by ending with 40 on Thursday in a 180-265 road victory over Clearwater.

Reid Pratt scored a 45 for West County (4-3). Noah Vinson followed with 47 and Mathew Clifton carded 48.

TENNIS

North County 5, Potosi 4

BONNE TERRE – The North County tennis team found itself triumphant against Potosi with another 5-4 victory on Thursday after winning by the same margin last week.

North County (6-2) settled for an even 3-3 split of the singles stage with Potosi (1-9). The Raiders took the top two doubles matches to secure their win.

Aaron Wright took the closest match against Curtis Mecey, 9-7 at No. 5 singles.

Jonathan Miller defeated Eli Hampton 8-6 for North County during the No. 3 singles contest.
