Knights sweep slick MAAA track meet

FARMINGTON – Athletes filed out of vehicles and surveyed the premises as rain continued to drench the parking lot at Farmington High School on Friday afternoon.

A section of the paved surface was isolated by ropes to serve as a javelin runway for the initial event scheduled at the MAAA conference track and field championship.

With traces of water also standing in each lane of the track and no convenient window to reschedule the meet, the decision was ultimately made to proceed as planned.

Farmington went on to overcome runner-up Ste. Genevieve and Potosi atop each division to claim the team titles as five individuals combined for victories in 12 events.

Ryan Parson continued his stellar senior campaign by sweeping three distance races, and the Knights repeated as conference champions on the boys’ side by a 28-point margin.

Parson received his closest challenge in the 3200 from Ste. Genevieve senior Schuyler Odgen, but prevailed by three-tenths of a second.

The high scorer of the meet was Ste. Genevieve senior Logan Rhinehart, who sprinted to victory in the 100, 200 and 400 dashes after topping the javelin field. He did not compete in the 300-meter hurdles despite winning that event last year.

The Farmington boys showed their roster balance with a top-four result in 16 of 19 events. Donovan Howard was a winner in the triple and long jumps, and finished second to Rhinehart in the 100.

Chris Yost triumphed in the high hurdles for the Knights, and edged Fredericktown’s Enoch Fisher in the high jump.

Central and Potosi each claimed three event titles while evenly splitting the relays. The Rebels shined in the 4×100 and 4×200, while the Trojans secured the 4×400 and 4×800.

Noah House propelled himself to a pole vault win for Central, and Ethan Roland registered the top discus throw for Potosi.

Valle Catholic grabbed victories from Ryan Grein in the intermediate hurdles and Brendan Meyer in the shot put. Meyer was also second in the discus and javelin.

The Warriors participated in their final meet ahead of the Class 1 postseason.

Girls action featured a mixture of familiar champions and rapidly rising stars. Farmington compiled 198 points to restore dominance after a 9-year championship run was interrupted by Ste. Genevieve.

Sophomore Jaylyn Woodley won duals with defending champion Madison Reynolds in the 100 and 200 sprints, and added a third victory in the 400.

Knights junior Isabelle Bradley won the discus, and captured her third MAAA title in the shot put by two inches over teammate Baylee Gilliam.

Farmington got other second-place results from both distance relay teams along with Natasja Hafner (high hurdles), Breanna Setchfield (300-meter hurdles) and Blair Busenbark (triple jump).

Reynolds was undeterred by the slick surface while finishing her third consecutive MAAA hurdles sweep. Her 300-meter time of 46.42 established a new meet record.

Ste. Genevieve lost an abundance of distance running talent from a year ago, but Sarah Moore stepped forward on Friday to win the 1600 and 3200 races.

Potosi thrived in the relay competition with victories in the 4×200 and 4×800 and a runner-up showing in the 4×100.

Freshman Jayleen Like picked up a triple jump triumph and was second in the long jump for the Lady Trojans, who were eight points behind the second-place Dragons.

Madison DeClue finished second in the 800 and 1600 while Potosi teammate Bryonna Allgier did likewise in the 3200.

Alexys Cook and Chloe Green ran strong closing laps during 4×100 and 4×400 relay wins as the Central girls captured five events overall.

Caitlyn Holmes opened the action by joining Alexus Groom in a 1-2 javelin finish, while MacKenzie Mills soared to a narrow victory over Like in the long jump.

Shandon Scherffius avenged a Simpson Relays loss to Ste. Genevieve’s Avery Reed in the high jump, and Potosi’s Peyton Skiles took third in the event which featured three reigning state qualifiers.

North County relied heavily on a strong freshman class, and picked up its own 1-2 result in the pole vault from Lauren Forrester and Sophia Welch.

Arcadia Valley sophomore Josie Landrum used a strong kick down the final stretch of her strongest event to claim the 800.

Valle Catholic sophomore Lainey Bauman placed second in the 400 and third in two shorter sprints.
