Roundup: Knights tennis eliminated by Bluff

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. – The Farmington boys tennis team was unable to achieve a second seeding upset in the Class 2, District 1 bracket on Wednesday.

David Stewart, Nathan Smith and Brett Keele notched straight-set victories in singles action to help top seed Poplar Bluff capture the district team title on its home courts.

The Mules captured two of three doubles contests, including a shutout at the No. 2 ranking, and rolled to a 5-1 victory.

Max Kleppe and Brock Quinton tallied an 8-5 doubles win for Farmington (9-4), which fell to Poplar Bluff 8-1 during the regular season.

The individual district tournament will be played Thursday in Farmington. Poplar Bluff senior Humza Siddiqui and Knights No. 1 player Alex England will likely headline the singles bracket.

BASEBALL

North County 6, Sikeston 4

BONNE TERRE – The North County baseball team drew six consecutive walks and scored four runs in the fifth inning to defeat Sikeston 6-4 in the regular season finale.

Dawson Harper pitched 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief with two strikeouts for the win, and catcher Drew Forney caught two runners stealing for the Raiders.

North County (17-7) received two RBI from Brian Chandler and Eli Claywell. Karson Kekec doubled while reaching base three times, and Nick Parker finished 1-for-1 with two runs scored.

Sikeston (12-6) generated two base runners in the top of the seventh inning, but the game ended with a fielder’s choice on a sprawling play by shortstop Kolten Poorman.

Bryce Bays finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and homered off Tucker Smith to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Three lead changes would follow.

Claywell singled in Kekec and Parker scored on a ground out by Chandler in the home half of the second. Sikeston answered with three runs in the third, highlighted by Trey Smith’s RBI double.

Harper inherited the bases loaded with a 4-2 deficit, but induced an inning-ending ground ball.

Sean Pruneau doubled off reliever Nate Self with two outs In the fifth before the next six Raiders were given free passes.

North County will open Class 4, District 2 action against Central on Saturday in Ste. Genevieve.

Bell City 4, Valle Catholic 2

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Bell City scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and edged Valle Catholic 4-2 at Capaha Park in a battle of reigning state champions.

Cole Nichols had two hits for the Class 1 Cubs (15-6), who carried a 2-0 lead until Valle Catholic came back with two runs in the top of the sixth.

Cole Wood and Chris Loida provided two hits each for the Warriors (22-5), who will begin their Class 2 title defense in a district semifinal game on Saturday.

Both starting pitchers – Kaden Bauman for Valle and Austin Hicks for Bell City – allowed two runs over five innings while striking out six.
