Mini triathlon to be held in Ste. Gen

The Ste. Genevieve County Community Center is hosting an event on May 27 that may be of interest to many area athletes.

The center’s mini triathlon is expected to draw competitors from around Missouri and surrounding states and is designed to accommodate novice participants while still giving more experienced triathletes a challenge. Touted as a “sprint” of sorts, the race starts with a 150-yard swim in the community center’s indoor pool followed by a nine mile bike ride over the county’s scenic, hilly terrain and ends with a three mile run.

The race will begin at 7:30 a.m. sharp using a 10-second stagger according to the predicted 150-yard swim time to divide the competitors up. For the bike portion, participants are required to wear a helmet and must bring their own bicycle and any other equipment needed for the race.

The entry fee is $45. Awards and custom medals will be given to the top three competitors in various age groups. Contestants can pick up their race packets beginning at 6:30 a.m. on race day.

To register, visit www.raceit.com or mail your payment with a registration form from www.sgccc.com/programs/races. A confirmation email with more race details will be sent one week prior to the event.

For competitors who want to learn more about how professional triathletes train and compete, a workshop free to registered racers is being held on May 26 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the community center. Delbert Marriott, a former USA Triathlon Professional Athlete, who competed in triathlons and duathlons, will talk about effective training strategies and techniques, transitions, nutrition and more. Racers are encouraged to take their bikes to the workshop as Marriott will be demonstrating how to transition correctly from biking to running to cut seconds off your time.

The community center is located at 21390 Highway 32, just outside of Ste. Genevieve. For questions or more information, call 573-883-5244.
