Sex offender faces new charges

A registered sex offender is being charged in another sexual crime involving a girl less than 14 years old.

Villis Cross, 71, of Cadet, is being charged with two counts of felony sodomy in the first degree. He is a previous sex offender and was charged in 1988 in Jefferson County when he was 42 years old for felony sexual abuse in the first degree involving a 12-year-old child.

According to a probable cause statement, on June 14 a girl less than 14 years old was at Cross’ house in the 10,000 block of Mystic Rd. in Cadet. The girl told a detective with the Multi-County Narcotics/Violent Crimes Division that Cross touched her inappropriately.

The incident was witnessed by another person, who walked into the room and saw Cross had his hand under the girl’s clothing. After Cross was arrested he told the detective the girl put his hand there. He also said he only felt clothing and nothing more.

Cross was being held in the Washington County Jail on a $150,000 bond and is not to have contact with anyone under the age of 17 upon his release.
