Fourth of July fireworks display returning to Fredericktown

Madison County residents won’t have to travel far for Fourth of July fireworks this year, with at least two public displays being planned around the holiday.

The Fredericktown Optimist Club will hold its second annual fireworks display at the Rotary Club soccer fields, and Optimist Club Member Connie Matthews said this year’s display will be even better than last years.

“There’ll be some fun and games down on the field for the kids to participate in between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.,” Matthews said. “Music will be provided by the Foothills Car Club.”

Matthews said the concession stand will offer a full menu of food and cold drinks for purchase and booths from local clubs and organizations, with room for more to sign up before the 4th.

“We’re encouraging groups, churches, clubs, organizations and businesses to come and set up a booth,” Matthews said. “To provide games and entertainment or information.”

Matthews said the Optimist Club requests that booths not sell food, as the concessions will be handled by the club itself.

Optimist Club Member Juli Kline said the list of clubs and organizations with booths at the event already contains some notable names, including the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, New Era Bank, Domino’s, the Fredericktown Civil War Museum, the Fredericktown JROTC Booster Club, the Glass Slipper Project, a local Relay for Life team and a group from the Marquand Methodist Church.

“The booths will be open from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., as well as games and the concession stand,” Kline said. “And then we’re going to do fireworks at dark, which will be at about 9 p.m.”

Kline said the Fredericktown Police Department will be on hand to help direct traffic and parking, with parking available on Buford Boulevard in front of the soccer fields.

The event was made possible by donations from the local community, building on the response from last year’s event.

“All the funds were collected from local businesses and individuals,” Kline said. “We had a really, really phenomenal response last year, and this year as well.”

Matthews said she hopes the event will continue to grow in the future, with more members of the community getting involved.

“We want to fill that field up down there, eventually,” Matthews said.

A fireworks display is also scheduled July 1 at Higdon Christian Church off Highway J in Madison County. There will be an ice-cream social beginning at 8 p.m. with fireworks beginning at dark.

The display is expected to last 30-40 minutes, and attendants are asked to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.
