Tournament highlights tennis in community

The Precision Eye Care Tennis Tournament (PECTT) was held June 22-25 at the Floyd Hager Tennis Complex in Farmington’s Engler Park, with adult and junior players from Farmington; Bonne Terre; Park Hills; Desloge; Belleview; DeSoto; Ironton; Poplar Bluff; Mountain View; Indianapolis, Indiana, and Felton, Deleware.

Executive Director Dr. John Fitz provided tournament shirts to all participants as well as awards for each event’s top winners. He will present checks to the Farmington and North County high school tennis programs during a presentation at the Precision Eye Care office in Farmington with Coach Andrew Canter (Farmington) and Coach Mary Hoehn (North County).

“I am always happy to use the entry fees to help the local high schools’ tennis programs,” Fitz said. “They’re able to use the money to offset costs of accommodations when traveling for tournaments and purchase items not in the schools’ budget.”

Tournament director Julie Powers said that the tennis community is very active and the tournament is always a fun opportunity for friendly competition as well as socializing. This year was no exception.

“The weather forecast was grim for the first two days of the tournament, but somehow we dodged the raindrops and didn’t have to reschedule any matches due to weather delays,” Powers said. “It was great seeing the courts filled, and each divisions’ finals matches were extremely competitive.”

The tournament is scheduled for the first weekend following Father’s Day each year. The 2018 tournament will be June 21-24. For more information about this tournament, questions can be directed to Executive Director Dr. John Fitz at 756-2020 or Tournament Director Julie Powers at 760-5880.
