Rebels sink Pirates to remain unbeaten

PARK HILLS – Central senior Tyreece Welch turned two short passes into lengthy scoring receptions during an explosive second half against the Perryville football team on Friday night.

The Rebels found success in the passing game during the later stages of the contest, and beat the Pirates 36-10 to maintain an unblemished record.

Welch recorded his second-longest reception of the night on a 25-yard touchdown for the first score following the break. He carried in a two-point conversion for a 21-3 lead with five minutes to play in the third.

Quarterback Jace Bland connected with Welch again, this time on a short crossing route late in the fourth. The scoring play covered 50 yards to seal the outcome for third-ranked Central (6-0, 3-0).

Bland was 12-for-16 for 188 yards and two touchdowns, and added 28 yards on the ground. Welch scored twice on 80 receiving yards, and netted 102 of his 112 rushing yards with another TD in the first half.

Aside from the two receptions, Sidebottom scored on short carry up the middle for a 30-3 edge with 10:20 left in the fourth. Dawson Day set up the touchdown with a 40-yard reception along the home sideline before being stopped inches short of the goal line.

Day Finished with 63 receiving yards on three catches, and Tanner Smith ran for 72 yards.

The Central defense played with intensity out of halftime, and held Perryville (4-2, 1-2) to just 33 yards from scrimmage over a span of 17 minutes.

Evan Sidebottom led the Rebels with six tackles, while Holden Mayberry and Ezra Sidebottom each had five with a forced fumble. Jake Glenn also tallied five tackles while Dawson Day and Ethan Weiss had four apiece.

Bryce Flaherty highlighted the Perryville offense late in the fourth with a 33-yard keeper to the outside to bring the team within 36-10, after gaining 18 yards on the same scheme one play earlier.

Flaherty totaled 84 rushing yards, and had the Pirates’ lone touchdown. Caleb Gremaud posted 32 of his 34 yards on five carries during the first half.

Eli Bierk kicked a 27-yard field goal to bring Perryville 6-3 with 8:15 to play in the second period.

Garrett Winkler converted a field goal from 24-yards out for Central with seconds remaining in the third after Ezra Sidebottom blocked a punt for excellent field position.

Welch struck early to give the Rebels a 6-0 advantage midway through the first quarter by breaking away for a 63-yard rushing touchdown on the first play of the second Central possession. 

The Perryville defense limited Central for the remainder of the first half by forcing two turnovers on downs and two three-and-outs.

The Rebels tried adding to their 13-3 lead with 50 seconds remaining before halftime, but connected on just one of four pass attempts.

Logan Thaxton tallied a game-high seven solo tackles for the Pirates, while James Rhoden and Caleb Harris each ended with five.

The Rebels overcame nine penalties, while Perryville was flagged for just two. Central also sent three kickoffs out of bounds.

The Rebels will host Fredericktown next week for Homecoming.
