Hiring event set for Oct. 10

The Missouri Jobs Center in Park Hills will be hosting a retail hiring event Oct. 10, giving job seekers the chance to directly speak to 10 employers and apply for jobs.

Mike Campbell with the job center said the event will be a great opportunity for people looking for all kinds of work to get hooked up with an employer.

“It’s going to be a huge retail hiring event,” Campbell said. “It’s going to be located at the First Baptist Church in Farmington, which is located at 210 North A Street. They have a huge gymnasium there. We’ll have 10 employers set up for applicants, so people looking for seasonal work, part-time work or full-time work can come in, go to each booth and talk to employers.”

The employers present at the event will be looking to hire people quickly, so attendees should be prepared to fill out applications and answer interview questions at the event.

“It’s designed for people to come in and fill out applications because these employers are hiring now,” Campbell said. “Applicants can go up and ask questions, but the employers that will be there are looking for people.”

Job seekers are encouraged to bring resumes with them for the employers to look over, and Campbell said the Park Hills Job Center can help get resumes in order in addition to other forms of preparation.

“We can help out with the resumes if they come in before the 10th,” he said. “We have different workshops, like how to work a job fair, resume-building workshops and even interview workshops.”

Campbell said it’s just as important to have a successful interview as it is to be qualified for a job, which many job applicants find out too late.

“Once someone puts an application in and an employer calls them to come in, normally there are questions that they’ll go over with the applicants and usually that’s where employees can blow it,” he said. “I put on mock interviews where I’ve got a lot of the questions that employers ask and I go over the psychology of the question and why they’re asking it, to help them prepare better.”

He encourages those interested in attending the hiring event to stop in at the Park Hills Job Center before Oct. 10 to receive assistance in building a resume, strengthening interview skills and printing copies of resumes for employers, all for free.

With unemployment being relatively low right now in the area, Campbell said the jobs center staff have been thinking of new ways to connect employers with quality employees.

“Our job is really to find jobs for people,” Campbell said. “So I work with employers on a constant basis to try and match up what they’re looking for to find good, qualified applicants to match up for those jobs. We have two kinds of customers — employers are our customers and so are the people who come in looking for work. So we try to match those up as much as we possibly can.”

The hiring event will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Farmington First Baptist Church at 210 North A Street. Participating employers include Glik’s, Hibbett Sports, Lowe’s, Rural King, Auto Zone, Farmington and Desloge Wal-Mart, Big Lots, Goodwill and Menards.
