‘Shop with a Hero’ volunteers spend weekend fundraising

Local volunteers spent the weekend raising money for the annual Shop with a Hero event which will take place Dec. 12 at the Fredericktown Walmart.

The weekend started out with the Second Annual “Shop with a Hero” Side X Side Benefit Ride Oct. 14 at Auto Plaza Group in Fredericktown. Many showed up to participate in the event which included raffles, door prizes, giveaways, chili and a five-hour side x side ride.

The event was $10 per person and was sponsored by Auto Plaza Group, Kemp’s Auto Body, Wilson Motor Sports, Matthews & Son’s Equipment, Seeding Solutions, The Flower Box, Ellis Battery, Midwest Sports Center and Steve & Garret’s Station.

“Every penny goes to the kids,” Fredericktown City Police Chief Eric Hovis said. “If we raise $14,000 it would be 140 kids getting $100 to Walmart.”

Fundraising continued Oct. 15 with the sale of giant pumpkins donated by Cedar Falls Tactical at GT Express Fuel Station. Pumpkins ranged in price from $5 to $50 with all money going to the cause.

Hovis said everything was done by volunteers and donations, and they do it all for the kids.

The Shop with a Hero program gives everyone a chance to be involved. The day of the event police, fire fighters, and EMTs will be there in their gear to help the children shop but they will also be accompanied by volunteer helpers. Anyone who wants to help can come join in and be a helper.

Hovis said the children will get to pick the hero they want to shop with which creates a little fun competition among departments.

Auto Plaza Group Sales Manager Mike Mills said to remember that during the month of October $100 per every vehicle sold will go to the “Shop with a Hero” program to benefit the kids of our community.

“If you are in the market for a new or pre-owned vehicle now is the month to do your shopping and be a part of this wonderful event and make a difference in a child’s life,” Mills said.
