Local Farmers Market closes for the season

With cloudy skies and blustery wind gusts, the Farmington Farmer’s Market closed it 2017 season on Saturday with die hard vendors selling the last of the season’s goods to loyal customers.

“We have had a pretty good season,” said Larry Bleckler, the market president. “We had our regulars who come every year and we added a few new ones. We already have applications for new vendors for next year. We will have one new vendor who will sharpen knives, scissors and things like that.”

Although it was a bit cold, several people still made their Saturday morning pilgrimage to the market one last time for the year.

For Lisa Dobbs and Roseanne Hulsey, the cold was not going to deter them from showing up once last time.

“We never miss the market,” Hulsey said. “We had to come out today. It’s going to be the last time until next April.”

The closing of the market at the end of the season is always a bit disheartening. However, many customers will still be able to get their fresh market fix, just in smaller doses.

For the third straight year, the Farmington VFW will be opening their doors to vendors every Wednesday morning while they are serving breakfast. From 7 a.m. to noon vendors can reserve a table and sell some produce and a few other items.

For Linda Williams, a local market vendor, the Wednesday morning indoor market is a great idea.

“It is kind of a lovely idea if you think about it,” Williams said. “You get to eat a wonderful hot breakfast, stay warm and still talk to all your customers. I am looking forward to it.”

Some of the vendors, like Kaie Schaffer and Cindy Reese, will still take orders for baked goods or fresh eggs and deliver them on Saturday morning on the parking lot of the VFW.

“I will still bake on Fridays and then deliver on Saturday,” Schaffer said. “But I will just have what people order, and maybe a little more. If someone wants to order something, they just need to email me at kaieschaffer@gmail.com and I will add you to my list.”

Reese, who said she will be trying the Wednesday morning market, said she will also sell on Saturdays as she has product available.

The regular market will reopen in April.

Braving the brisk weather, Lisa Dobbs, left, and Roseanne Hulsey hit the Farmington Farmers Market one last time as Saturday was the local market's last day of the selling season. With the help of the Farmington VFW, some of the vendors will set up a table on Wendesday morning inside the VFW's hall and offer a smaller selection from 7 a.m. to noon.
