Warriors ride Hayti mistakes to victory

STE. GENEVIEVE – Valle Catholic capitalized on 16 total penalties against Hayti during the Class 1, District 1 championship game on Friday night.

Valle Catholic attacked early to score on its first four offensive drives, and maintained their intensity for a 42-18 triumph.

The Warriors (10-1) will travel to play Thayer in the Class 1 state quarterfinals next Saturday after clinching their 10th consecutive district title.

Senior quarterback Mason Skaggs led the push with two rushing touchdowns on 119 yards, plus 107 yards and another score on 12-of-17 passing with an interception for Valle Catholic.

Skaggs posted three carries for 25 yards and connected with Chris Loida three times to cover the same distance on the opening drive. Valle gained the initial lead of 7-0 on a 5-yard keeper by Mason with 7:26 to play in the first quarter.

Owen Schweigert recovered an errant pitch on just the second offensive play by Hayti to give the Warriors possession at the opposing 31.

Valle Catholic moved inside the Hayti 10 due to a defensive pass interference call, and Skaggs found Carter Roth in the back of the end zone on the next play for a 14-0 lead.

Roth finished with four receptions and threw one pass to Ryan Grein for 38 yards.

Skaggs extended the Valle Catholic advantage to 21-0 with 2:30 to play in the opening period by diving across the plane on a 7-yard keeper.

The first play of the second quarter marked Roth’s halfback pass to Grein to reach the Hayti 7. Grein capped the drive two plays later with a 7-yard carry for a 28-0 advantage.

Hayti starting quarterback L’Darrius McIntrye looked to the air nearing the break, but was picked off by Grein, who brought the ball back to the Hayti 13 with five minutes on the clock.

However, Jaishaud More answered by intercepting Skaggs three minutes later to place the Indians near midfield.

Replacement quarterback Chrivontae Moore took a late shot to the endzone, and completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to John Agnew to bring the score within 28-6 two seconds before halftime.

Moore posted three touchdowns and 112 yards on 9-of-19 passing for the Indians. Norshawn McIntrye threw for 84 yards.

Ivory Winters paced Hayti offensively with two touchdowns and 115 yards on seven receptions, plus 90 rushing yards.

Valle Catholic leaned heavily on the running game with a sizable edge during the second half. Its lone pass attempt was a 10-yard gain from Skaggs to Loida in the fourth quarter.

Roth and Skaggs shouldered most of the late carries. Roth totaled 63 rushing yards with a TD, and momentarily exited the game late due to leg cramps.

McIntyre paced all defenders with seven tackles, and Winters added five for the Indians.

Brendan Meyer recorded 11 tackles and Jacob Bieser added 10 to lead the Warriors. Skaggs provided an interception during the third, and Schweigert had two fumble recoveries.
