Dance squad finishes successful season

The Farmington Middle School Junior Knightline Squad brought home first and third place honors from the St. Charles Classic Dance Competition on Jan. 27.

The team, made up of 12 dancers, is coached by Sheri Hickey. The team took home third place in the Pom Division and first place in the Middle School Mix Division.

“Several teachers and community members have commented, to me about how good they are,” Hickey said. “Folks compliment me, but I always say, ‘It’s all them.’ They have good foundations from their studios, and are able to pick up the routines quickly. I organize practices and tell them what looks good, and they take my directions and make corrections.”

The team learned the competition pom routine during a three-day camp in July, 2017 led by members of the Farmington High School Knightline Squad.

“Grace Gilliam worked out most of the choreography and taught them the dance, along with Katie King, Britney Goldsmith, and Izzy Holloway,” Hickey said.

The team would learn two more routines from members of the Junior Varsity Knightline to use during performances at school.

A two-day mini-camp during Christmas break is where Varsity Head Coach Janna Hagerty and Cheri Settle choreographed and taught the competition mix routine—which included elements of hip hop, kick and pom.

“We competed in exhibition at the Farmington Dance Invitational, on Jan. 13, and received great feedback from the judges,” Hickey said, “which we took and made changes to our two routines, to get them ready for the St. Charles Classic.

“I told them they are worthy of all the kind words, and awards they have received. We have trophies to prove it now.”

Hickey said tryouts for the 2018-19 squad will take place the first two weeks of March.
