Dragons share Class 2 lead at state tourney

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Ste. Genevieve entered this week poised for positive results after increasing its number of Class 2 state wrestling qualifiers from seven to 10 compared to last year.

With eight athletes surviving the first day of competition, including six first-round winners, the Dragons ended Thursday afternoon perched atop the team standings.

Jared Humbolt (145) and Wade Hahn (182) are each hoping to take the next step on the medals podium after placing third to highlight the 2017 Ste. Genevieve contingent as juniors.

Humbolt needed just 32 seconds to pin Dylan Scarborough of Oak Grove for his team-high 49th win, and Hahn likewise dominated his state opener with a fall in 1:03 against Garrett Schick of Pleasant Hill.

Jacob Dickens (106), Nathan Geisner (113) and Isaac Boyd (285) also had successful returns to Mizzou Arena after helping the Dragons go 7-for-7 on day one of the event last winter.

Dickens sealed a victory by fall in the third period, while Geisner rolled to a 14-1 major decision and Boyd advanced with a 7-3 win.

Tyler Hale continued his postseason surge at 220 pounds with a fall over Grant Arcano of Clinton at 1:07, and Ste. Genevieve totaled 25 points to share the Class 2 lead with Odessa.

Dalton McNeal (120) and reigning fifth-place medalist Grant Staffen (132) responded from initial losses on Thursday to stay alive in consolation brackets.

State newcomers Ty Brown (170) and Tyler Jenkins (195) were eliminated after sustaining two first-period falls.

Elsewhere in Class 2, Potosi senior Ben Turnbough improved to 38-0 in his quest for an unbeaten state title that narrowly slipped away last year.

Turnbough (195) was not threatened in the round of 16, picking up a fall over Jacob Search of Maryville at 1:07. He was the lone member of the Trojans to win his opening bout.

Jaydee Vick (152) and Kalub Evans (220) scored decisions in the wrestleback round to stick around Friday, while Austin Harris (145) was outscored twice for Potosi.

Standout freshman Kade Willis is the lone remaining medal contender among four Central participants following a solid debut at 126 pounds.

Willis pinned Blake Schmidt of Southern Boone late in the second period, but teammates Garrett Smith (106), Joshua Countryman (113) and William Mayberry (160).

The Class 3 tournament features wrestlers from Farmington and North County, along with a possible head-to-head clash between the schools at 220 pounds.

Farmington junior Dalton Berg, recently ranked second in his weight class, punctuated a fall over Chris Perez in one minute even.

Allison, who finished second to Berg in last week’s district tournament, moved to 38-4 overall while stamping a quarterfinal berth with a fall over Webb City’s Matt Miller at 1:58.

Farmington earned three first-round wins in total on Thursday, as Kyle Crawford (113) secured a second-period fall and senior Dylan Allen (160) did the same to land his 48th victory.

Ian Asher dropped two contests at 138 pounds for the Knights. North County’s Cole Cresswell (160) and Jordan Borseth (132) also saw their seasons conclude.

Valle Catholic representatives Jacob Bieser (220) and Trey Huck (145) were each defeated in their initial matches during Class 1 action.

Bieser later claimed a 10-8 decision over Jake McGough of Diamond to avert elimination and extend his senior campaign.
