February library maker space to focus on automobiles

The Park Hills Public Library will be hosting its second monthly “maker space” activity, focused on giving the kids the opportunity to learn about science while crafting simple machines with household items.

Last month, the first maker space night was focused on the science of flight and crafting simple airplanes. The February maker space will have kids learning about another form of locomotion and crafting balloon-powered cars.

“We’ll be making our own cars,” said Library Director Lisa Sisk. “They’re made out of jewelry boxes that are cut, with wheels on the sides and straws that attach to a balloon. You blow into the straw and it powers the car. It’ll be fun. We’ll probably have races downstairs when we get done.”

The maker space activity this month will be held at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 22, with registration open and at least six kids already registered. Sisk said January’s program attendance was down, probably due to increased cases of the flu, but she anticipates stronger attendance this month.

The maker space activity became available after a series of books was obtained by the library, which showed how to create simple projects from household items.

“We’ll have books on display about the history of automobiles and things like that for the kids to check out when they’re done,” Sisk said.

For more information or to register children aged 6-12 for the maker space event, contact the library at 573-431-4842.
