School board OKs graduation date

The Bismarck Board of Education approved the annual report on the District Evaluation Plan and set a tentative date for high school graduation in May, among other business, when it met in regular session Monday night in the elementary school library.

Superintendent Jason King presented the evaluation plan to the board for its approval.

“The District Evaluation Plan is something we do every year that basically focuses on curriculum and instruction,” said King. “We have course outcomes that we go over; the way we develop our instructional strategies; and also making sure the courses have certain objectives and that parents are informed of what they are. We have regular teachers coordinating what they do with the special education programs, and also the processes we use to effectively evaluate curriculum and instruction each year.”

The board approved the plan as presented by King.

Next on the agenda was the setting of a date for the class of 2018 commencement exercises.

“Keeping in mind that area school districts have already taken several weather-related days off and it’s possible there could be more to come, the board approved a tentative date of May 11 for high school graduation,” King said.

Board members next approved the 2018-2019 school calendar.

“There aren’t any big changes,” King said. “The last day of school as of right now is Wednesday, May 16 and the first day of school will be Tuesday, Aug. 14. Christmas break starts at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21 — we’ll have an early dismissal that day. Then we will return to school on Monday, Jan. 7.

In other action, the board approved several routine policy updates mandated by the school district’s attorney and, during the monthly superintendent report, learned that plans are continuing to proceed for the April bond issue.
