Roundup: Central strolls to title contest

CUBA, Mo. – A rematch of the memorable Central Christmas Tournament girls championship game that required double overtime is set.

The Class 3, District 3 title will be at stake this time, and the top-seeded Lady Rebels secured their berth Monday night with a dominant 66-36 semifinal triumph over West County.

Skyler Amonette recorded 10 of her game-high 22 points during a dazzling first quarter for Central (25-1), which earned its 19th straight win and will face Steelville on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Kimmy Wallen provided 11 points while Caitlyn Holmes and Karissa Belfield added nine each. The Lady Rebels converted 15-of-23 chances from the line.

Amonette drained a 3-pointer and sank another shot with time winding down to establish a 22-9 lead through one period as the Central defense caused havoc.

Belfield beat the halftime buzzer with another shot from beyond the arc, and the resulting 46-20 margin further increased with an 18-8 scoring disparity in the third quarter.

Allee Drennen powered West County (18-9) with 16 points, and finished several possessions at the rim when the Lady Bulldogs managed to crack the pressure.

Chris Brewer completed his 14th and final season as West County head coach after announcing his decision to take an assistant principal position at North County. He compiled an overall record of 206-163, and guided the Lady Bulldogs to a district crown in 2012.

Four starters are projected to return next season, including forward Dori McRaven, who capped a superb freshman season with eight points in the loss.

Steelville held off Grandview 47-41 in the other semifinal.

Oran 86, Valle Catholic 38

PERRYVILLE, Mo. – Leah Cauble dominated with 35 points, and top-seeded Oran eliminated Valle Catholic from the Class 2, District 2 tournament with an 86-38 semifinal win.

Jessie Long netted 21 points, Kaylee Payne added 12, and the Lady Eagles advanced to face Chaffee in the title game after posting a 30-3 scoring margin in the third quarter.

Kaydi Heil scored nine points to pace Valle Catholic (13-15), which sank seven 3-pointers but faced deficits of 25-7 through one quarter and 48-27 at halftime.

Senior guard Sydni Basler departs as the Lady Warriors’ career scoring leader after equaling freshman Hannah Fowler with seven points in defeat.

Perryville 46, Ste. Genevieve 42

STE. GENEVIEVE – Maci Hotop recorded 16 points, and Perryville grabbed a 46-42 road victory on Senior Night in Ste. Genevieve.

The Lady Pirates picked up nine points from Kirsten Steif, and prevailed after trailing 23-22 at halftime.

Avery Reed tallied 11 points and Matti Helms scored 10 in their final home game for Ste. Genevieve (16-8). Jennifer Humbolt added seven points.

Poplar Bluff 68, Farmington 59

FARMINGTON – Poplar Bluff sophomore Kiley Bess surged past 1,000 career points, and converted 14-of-16 free throws during a 68-59 road victory over Farmington.

Bess finished with a game-high 34 points for the Lady Mules, who outscored the Knights 39-27 during the second half. Doni Everts added 10 points.

Alyson Tucker netted 15 points, Macey Pauls scored 14 and Claire Busse notched 13 for Farmington (14-10), which held a 32-29 lead at halftime.

McKenna Moore chipped in nine points. The Knights will host Festus on Tuesday.
