Exhibit highlights early history of area

An important look at the history of our area is taking place this weekend at the Farmington Public Library.

The Farmington Museum presents an exhibit on Native American artifacts, showcasing an expert in those artifacts from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Items from the personal collections of local collectors will be on display during the weekend events – with a little bit of everything set to be included at the event.

Experts on hand will offer a presentation appropriate for third and fourth grade students from 10 to 11 a.m. and again from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

The presentations for students is focusing on taking a trip back in time almost 2,000 years ago and learning about the Native Americans who lived in the area, how they lived, what they lived in, how they obtained their food and what they ate, how they dressed – a look at their lifestyle.

Students will be able to get an up-close look at some of the most common tools used at the time, while relating what a comparable item of today would look like.

On Saturday, the presentation is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. and is aimed at teens through adults. The presentation during that time will give a look at some of the more advanced artifacts.

Displays will also show the different types of dwellings used by Native Americans, noting those most commonly found in the area. A number of unusual items, such as different types of pipes, beads and other artifacts included in the weekend exhibit.

The public must access the library from the Liberty Street entrance on Saturday. No reservations are required on Saturday. If a large group would want to attend, please call Jessie Williams at 314-609-0910 so adequate seating will be available.

Collectors will trade, sell and show off their Native American artifacts on Sunday.
