West County recognizes athletic excellence

Before the March 15 meeting of the West County Board of Education, administrators and board members took time to recognize some high school athletes who had distinguished themselves during the course of this year’s season.

“One of our favorite things to do is to recognize our kids,” said Superintendent Stacy Stevens. “We’re here for academics, but the extracurricular side of it is so important. We’re very proud of our kids and our teams. It’s a huge part of the overall experience of high school.”

High School Principal Eric Moyer first recognized high school girls’ basketball players Cheyenne Young, Allee Drennan and Dori McRaven.

Young was recognized for being selected for second-team All-Conference, her third year being named to the MAAA All-Conference Team.

Drennan was recognized for being selected to the MAAA first team All-Conference.

McRaven was recognized for being named first team MAAA All-Conference and first team All-District. Moyers mentioned that she had scored almost 500 points this year, despite being a freshman.

Moyers next recognized high school boys’ basketball players who had distinguished themselves, including Hayden Roney, Nate Kinnard, Reid Pratt and Noah Vinson.

Roney was recognized for being selected for second team All-Conference as a junior.

Kinnard was recognized for being selected second team All-Conference, Pratt for being first team all-conference and Vinson for being selected first team all-conference and first team all-district.

Of seniors Kinnard, Pratt and Vinson, Moyers said he was proud of their performance over their four years of high school.

“The bad thing is they’re seniors,” Moyers said. “So we’ve seen the end of the basketball careers with us, which I hate to see. I’ve enjoyed watching all of these boys over their four years in high school and to see them mature and their game improve.”
