Distinguished student leaders recognized

The Missouri Association of Student Councils announced Fredericktown High School students Haley Gilmore, Skylar Tarkington, and Bailey Stamp were recognized at the 70th Annual State Convention held at Lebanon High School, March 8-10, 2018.

The Distinguished Student Leader Award is the highest recognition bestowed on graduating seniors who have demonstrated superior student council leadership skills and knowledge based on MASC criteria and evaluation procedures.

To become a Distinguished Student Leader, students must be members of their student councils in MASC member schools and graduating at the time they submit their applications. The standards for the Distinguished Student Leader program reflect the core purposes and mission of student councils. Additionally, the evaluation procedure has been designated so that the bulk of the process takes place at the school level with the results being forwarded to MASC for the final assessment. This facilitates a process that will help students become more proficient in self-assessment practices and better able to organize and build a record of evidence focused on their student council and related leadership activities.

Ninety-two students from across the state met the criteria and earned the distinction. The award winners are given a certificate of recognition and a silver key chain.

“This group of Distinguished Student Leaders represent the best Missouri has to offer in student leadership,” said Terri Johnson, MASC Executive Director. “They have been actively involved in their home councils, attended state and national student council events and embody all the qualities we believe make a strong leader. These young people have held office, chaired committees, provided hours of community service and are outstanding role models in their schools. I am confident they will continue their leadership journey at the next level.”
