MAC hosts book fair

PARK HILLS— In a bid to promote literacy in the community while also building their own professional networking and organizational skills, local community college honor students are planning the fourth annual Mineral Area College Scholastic Book Fair.

Students from Mineral Area College’s Early Childhood Education and Teacher Education programs will offer a week-long, Scholastic book fair, April 2-6, at the C.H. Cozean Library on the Park Hills campus, from 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-11 a.m. Friday.

April 3 has been designated “Grand Night,” with free crafts, games, a photo booth, refreshments, and appearances by special guest characters from 5-7 pm. This year’s theme is “Wild West Book Fair: Saddle Up and Read!” and organizers say the Western motif is sure to excite kids of all ages.

Last year’s fair saw dozens of parents and kids choosing books that ranged in prices from as little as 99 cents. Book Fair Chairwoman Madelynn Tripp is excited to lead this year’s committee and create a fun, meaningful literacy event for local children and their parents.

“I always enjoyed going to the book fair when I was in elementary school,” Tripp said. “Talking to my friends about books and taking a new book home to read always brought a smile to my face.”

Early Childhood Education Dept. Chairwoman Jennifer Sikes, Teacher Education Program Coordinator Dr. Shawn Young, Library Director Melissa Hopkins, Reading Instructor Ellen Miller and English Department Chairperson Pam Jaycox are serving as mentors to a committee of honor students, which includes Stephanie Behlke of Salem, Tiffany Everitt of Potosi, William Farr, Jr. of Bonne Terre, Shelby Leutzinger of Bonne Terre, Hannah Lucas of Bonne Terre, Samantha Retzer of Leadwood, and Madelynn Tripp of Farmington.

Tripp said book fair preparations are coming along well, and she is particularly excited about Grand Night.

“Being a member of last year’s book fair committee showed me how truly important it is to get books into children’s hands,” she said. “I can’t wait for the children to come to Grand Night and see all the books and exciting activities we have planned this year.”
