Farmers market opening delayed

Anyone planning to visit Farmington’s Farmers Market opening day for the 2018 season will have to hold off a week due to the unseasonably cold and wet forecast for Saturday.

According to Larry Bleckler, a local farmer who has been a part of the farmers market for 12 years and currently serves as its president, the weather is simply going to be too cold for the farmers and their crops, as well as customers who make it a point to shop the locally-grown produce and other items on VFW Post 5896’s parking lot at 814 E Karsch Boulevard in Farmington.

“Temperatures are expected to be around freezing and the plants can’t take it,” he said. It’s just too cold for people to be out unless they have to. Instead, the farmer’s market will open next Saturday from 7 a.m. to noon.”

Blecker began selling produce at the farmers market about three years after it started and over the years has made lots of friends with customers and his fellow vendors, many of whom have been coming there at least as long as he has.

“I’ve met a lot of good people through the years,” he said. “It’s really grown too. This year we’ve got 30 vendors. On average we have 20 to 26 vendors there every Saturday. We’ve gotten a few new ones in the past year or two, but mostly they’re the same ones that have been there.”

Bleckler explained that farmers markets are becoming increasingly popular as consumers increasingly prefer fresh off the-farm products to serve their families.

“It’s all locally grown,” he said. “There’s virtually no chemicals used. Almost everybody tries to just use natural stuff.”

The farmers market is held Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon beginning in April and continuing through October. As of May 2, it will also be open from 2-5 p.m. Wednesdays.
